How do i know I need a new catalytic converter?

You can tell if your catalytic converter needs replacement if you notice:

  • a check engine light

  • reduced engine performance

  • decreased fuel efficiency

  • a sulfur smell from the exhaust

  • rattling noise coming from the exhaust system

What causes a catalytic converter to go bad?

Common causes include:

  • Engine misfires

  • Oil or coolant leaks

  • Fuel that’s too rich (too much gas, not enough air)

  • Physical damage from road debris

Can catalytic converters be cleaned or repaired?

Most of the time, if a catalytic converter is going bad, it’ll need to be replaced. Trying to clean or fix it usually turns into an expensive, complicated job that doesn’t work out. That can leave you stuck paying both the failed repair and the replacement.
